begin haiku is a place to take apart what we know about haiku, examine it closely, and put it back together again.

My name is Gary Warner. I began to study haiku in 1989. Some of my poems are published in books and magazines, but I am a beginner. To me, the beginner is someone who says each day "I wish to learn" and goes about the world with eyes open and mind hungry.

I hope you will come begin haiku with me.

April 2003 --
Our first guest contributor is Michael Dylan Welch. I began corresponding with Michael while I was launching "Dogwood Blossoms", which was actually named at Michael's suggestion! I thought it appropriate that as my first teacher, I invite him to be our first teacher here as well. Michael is the editor of Tundra and the proprietor and editor of Press Here Books, whose publications have earned the Haiku Society of America Merit Book Award nine times! Besides excellence in editing, Michael co-founded the Haiku North America Conference, and served for many years as an officer of Haiku Poets of Northern California, editing its quarterly journal Woodnotes from 1989 to 1997. His poems have won many awards, including the 2000 Henderson Award, the 1995 Brady Award from the Haiku Society of America, and the 2002 Drevniok Award from Haiku Canada, and have been widely published in nearly every major English-speaking haiku journal.
