a cloud of gnats drifts
over the pond

The heady and delightful scent of evening flowers in still air also brings the biting insects that compromise our enjoyment. Naturally the honeysuckle scent isn't meant for us at all but for those gnats to pollinate the flowers! Human conceit takes a back seat to nature, it feels to me like a genuine Japanese sentiment.
