- October 11, 2008 -- As you may have already heard, our friend William Higginson has completed his struggle with cancer. Curtis Dunlap shared a letter from Penny on his blog, where it would be appropriate to share a remembrance about Bill if you have one. Bill actually wrote a column for our Begin Haiku webpages, which I introduced with some thoughts about Bill. His column was called A Sense of the Genre, A Sense of the Language. Penny, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you for sharing Bill with us for all these many years and the support you gave him in his artistry.

- September 12, 2008 -- Small Canyons 3 Anthology is being published by the HSA Southwest Region coordinator and members. It is not an official HSA project. Small Canyons 3 is digest sized, desktop published, saddle stapled, heavy card stock cover with a graphic. Submissions are open to anyone who lives in or is interested in the southwest region.
Send one paragraph bio and 10 haiku, senryuu, tanka, SciFaiku or cinquain to Jim Applegate by email. Send $10.00 to (this pays for 1 copy of the book, student rate is $5.00). Please try to have them to Jim by Oct 1, 2008. If you'd like to order more include the price of the books to:

- April 27, 2008 -- Join the Bangor Haiku Group
and fellow haiku poets for an afternoon summer event on Saturday, July 26, 2008, 1-5pm.
Visit the largest botanical gardens in New England in full bloom http://www.mainegardens.org and share haiku. Featured readers are
Anne LB Davidson and Bruce Ross. View the meditation and rhododendron
gardens and walk the Shoreline Trail. View the kinetic sculptures of
George Sherwood.
We have reserved the gazebo in the relatively quiet area near the
Shoreline Trail, a half mile from the Visitors Center.
Our schedule is:
1-2pm introductions and Anne
LB Davidson/Bruce Ross reading at the gazebo
2-4pm walk where you wish or simply remain at the gazebo
4-5pm share your inspirations
at the gazebo
5pm . . . dinner at nearby

Come early and have your lunch in the picnic area or at the cafe. The admission is $10 at the
entrance where you will be given directions to the gazebo.
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is about an hour northeast of Portland,
Maine and about three hours from Boston.
